Module 5.0

This assignment requires students to use Picard's Model of Association Chart, along with Meyer's Multimedia Design Principles, to reply to two quotes listed below. First, I would like to give a brief introduction to Picard's Model. The model represents the analysis of the need for information exchanged and the need for relationship building and can aid instructors in choosing the correct medium for their students and their specific course. The model is represented below:

1) "Our challenge as educators is to be creative in deciding what is the best medium or mixture of me for a specific course or program, and what is the most appropriate technology for delivering it. In setting up programs and designing courses, a basic principle of a systems approach is to recognize that each medium had its special strengths and weaknesses and that these must be considered when deciding how to deliver each part of the program or course to its particular target population," Moore and Kearsley (pg. 87).

My response to the quote was initially, and this is just a brief summation, to agree with it, and that has not changed. Choosing the appropriate type of technology and medium is extremely important, especially in a distance education classroom. The video below doesn't exactly touch on the topic of the type of technology/medium, but it does encourage using technology in the classroom and when taking DE classes. The speaker in the video is Harvey Stenger and he is giving a speech at a TED Talk at Binghamton University. Steve and Chris spoke highly of TED Talks in their responses this week, so when I came across this video I thought it was perfect.

This video mainly discusses technology in education, not necessarily higher education, and what questions we need to be asking in order to maximize efficiency from the technology being used. It's a little off topic, but definitely a cool video. He uses illustrations along with narration in order to get his point across. Although the content of the video may not quite relate to our discussion this week, the video itself certainly does. Paul Hamilton uses audio, video, and data to discuss the use of technology in classrooms.

2) "Teaching presence is the leadership and facilitation necessary for individuals to achieve ‘meaningful understanding’ through interaction and collaboration (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2001). Teaching presence recognizes that students may not spontaneously use discussion effectively, and that collaboration, especially among these still learning its forms, is facilitated by appropriate amounts of structure," Biesenbach-Lucas, 2004.

Again, when I first read this quote, I agreed. And again, I still have not changed my opinion. Teaching presence, as outlined in the video below, is of the utmost importance in a classroom setting, especially when referencing DE. In the video, Dr. Mark Kassel explains the ways in which he attempts to maintain a solid presence in all of his online courses. I think we all have seen instructors make these same efforts in most of our courses in the OILS program. Or, conversely, maybe some of us have been in online courses and we wish the instructors would have used some of these ideas!

Test Post 1

This is just a test. I want to make sure I can create/edit posts before I try for the real thing!
